Bassist MonoNeon has posted wild videos in which he plays along to spoken word clips from the likes of 1970s DC talk show host Petey Greene Jr. and the unavoidable Donald Trump. The musician, known for his funk collaborations as well as his embrace of avant-garde sounds, finds the melodies in the speech and, seemingly, plays along on his bass in real time with the clip. Amazing! Is there any rehearsal or editing? There must be some editing involved, but the vibe is improvisational and immediate (and humorous and bitingly satirical). But it’s worth checking out these experimental performances. Finding the melodies in human speech is the core of Poetry DNA, too, although here we use Ableton Live software to convert the audio to digital. MonoNeon bypasses that middle technological step, as it were, ’cause he’s got the skills! Wild.
